- [19:09] <mattrobenolt> Ok, wasn't sure if there was some internal way to handle it.
- [19:09] <mattrobenolt> I'll just push my items into both a list and a set at the same time. I only need the list to preserve order.
- [19:10] <mattrobenolt> That'll be much quicker than pulling the entire list and looping over it.
- [19:10] <vsmatck> You may be able to use ZSCORES to preserve order.
- [19:10] <mattrobenolt> Well, this is for a game. And we can't use ZSCORES because server time won't ever be exact down to milliseconds across a cluster.
- [19:11] <mattrobenolt> So we're pushing user ids into a list as they finish.
- [19:11] <vsmatck> Ah
- [19:11] <mattrobenolt> So it's guaranteed to be the right order.
- [19:11] <mattrobenolt> THen later, I need to check if a user has played x games ina row. So I need to query over x lists and see if they're in it.
- [19:12] <mattrobenolt> So I'll just push their ids into both a set and the list, then I can do a multi query across the x sets if their id is in it. Unless you can think of a better way?
- [19:12] <vsmatck> Hm. I still think there may be a way. If you did INCR you could get higher IDs that'd be unique. So you could do relative order.
- [19:12] <mattrobenolt> It's only going to be 3-5 sets, so it's really minimal.
- [19:13] <mattrobenolt> What would I be incrementing?
- [19:13] <vsmatck> Err. I probably don't know enough about your problem to talk. If memory is not a issue you could waste a little and that'd be ok. :)
- [19:14] <mattrobenolt> For simplicity, it's a multi player quiz game.
- [19:15] <mattrobenolt> Essentially like, 10000 users will be playing at once, and as people are buzzing in answers, we're shoving their user id into a LIST to preserve the order they finished at.
- [19:15] <mattrobenolt> The reason for this is because we have a cluster of servers managing the game. So every server is pushing into the same global redis list.
- [19:15] <mattrobenolt> Each round has a random UUID.
- [19:15] <mattrobenolt> I'm keeping a list of each round as it passes in another global 'rounds' list.
- [19:16] <mattrobenolt> So at the end of each round, we can grab a top 10 list by doing a basic LRANGE.
- [19:16] <mattrobenolt> And then we go through and calculate achievements for everyone.
- [19:17] <mattrobenolt> One of those is playing 3 rounds in a row. So I'm pulling an LRANGE for the last 3 rounds.
- [19:17] <mattrobenolt> Then I need to check if that user id is in each list for the rounds.
- [19:17] <mattrobenolt> But I can't do that, so I'm going to push the user_id into a list and a set at the same time, then I can do an SISMEMBER of each set.
- [19:18] <vsmatck> Ah, I see the problem. My suggestion wouldn't have worked for that.
- [19:18] <mattrobenolt> And no, memory isn't really an issue. The lists are relatively small and expire every hour just to keep things clean.
- [19:19] <mattrobenolt> Redis is used for some temporary data and calculations, then after each round, things are written into a MySQL database for persistence.
- [19:19] <mattrobenolt> Make sense?
- [19:19] <vsmatck> yeah, I understand exactly what you're doing now.
- [19:19] <mattrobenolt> Is there something I'm missing, or is that basically what I have to do?
- [19:20] <mattrobenolt> I can easily pipeline the RPUSH and SADD, so there won't be any overhead in that statement. Just using a tad bit more memory.
- [19:20] <vsmatck> I totally can't think of a better way than what you described.
- [19:21] <mattrobenolt> That's enough confirmation for me. :) Just wanted to make sure I wasn't going crazy on a Friday night.
- [19:21] <mattrobenolt> Game launches Monday, haha
- [19:21] <vsmatck> yikes
- [19:22] <mattrobenolt> Everything else is done, we're just going through and doing some algorithms for the different achievements, and came across this last one that we weren't really keeping track of data for.
- [19:22] <mattrobenolt> Playing x consecutive games.
- [19:22] <mattrobenolt> Previously, we weren't even keeping track of order of rounds. It's not relevant for anything else.
- [19:22] lstrojny (~lstrojny@host-188-174-174-196.customer.m-online.net) left irc: Quit: lstrojny
- [19:23] <mattrobenolt> Everything else is great. We're beating the shit out of Redis's pub/sub channels.
- [19:24] <mattrobenolt> Well, probably not in comparison to what Redis can handle. We're sending out a global heartbeat game ticker to all connected nodes to keep the game in sync and timers, etc.
- [19:24] <mattrobenolt> And constantly publishing data so everyone else in the cluster gets it to keep everyone's screens fresh with data.

- [19:25] <vsmatck> Are you using redis cluster? Or are your application servers all connected to one redis server?
- [19:25] <mattrobenolt> Just one instance.
- [19:26] <mattrobenolt> At most, we're scoped out to handle 10,000 concurrent players.
- [19:26] <mattrobenolt> So traffic through Redis is pretty minimal compared to it's benchmarks.
- [19:26] <mattrobenolt> We'll never be pushing 50k operations per second.
- [19:27] <vsmatck> Hm. I bet redis cluster wouldn't really speed up pubsub in a situation where everyone is subscribed to the same channel.
- [19:27] ozataman (~ozataman@pool-108-6-239-203.nycmny.fios.verizon.net) joined #redis.
- [19:27] <mattrobenolt> The biggest hurdle of this entire project is the fact that the game is running at the exact same time for everyone. So everyone finishes the game at once and instantly a ton of data is being thrown around and calculated.
- [19:27] <vsmatck> Probably can't really get any faster for messaging than redis pub/sub. It's pretty fast/minimal.
- [19:27] <mattrobenolt> Yeah, speed isn't our issue with Redis.
- [19:28] <mattrobenolt> We have a few Node servers handling the live part of the game with socket.io.
- [19:28] <mattrobenolt> Those connections are pooled with Redis so we can spin up and down game servers.
- [19:28] <mattrobenolt> Then we have RabbitMQ running to act as a job queue.
- [19:29] <mattrobenolt> When the round finishes, if there are 10000 people playing, we need to calculate their achievements earned, tally up scores, insert rows into MySQL, etc. We shove 10,000 jobs into RabbitMQ, which then a cluster of worker servers pick up and hammer it out.
- [19:29] <mattrobenolt> Then publish the results back over Redis when finished.
- [19:29] <mattrobenolt> The bursts of data are the only challenge.
